Coastal Cooking in Pomerania and Gdansk
The Pomerania region of Poland is an exciting destination for a culinary vacation. The region offers unique and delicious seafood and other types of specialties found only in this part of Poland. In addition, the area is full of spectacular beaches and scenery, thanks to the Baltic Sea coast and three diverse sub-regions of Western Pomerania, Kuyavia and Kaszubia or Kashubia. Kashubians are of particular interest, they live in the Eastern part of Pomerania which is often referred to as “Kashubian Switzerland”. They have a distinct cuisine, culture, language, musical style and art form. Kashubian folklore is still alive and carefully looked after to this day. We’ll be cooking with Kashubian women in their villages and learning about their rich cultural traditions throughout the entire week.
The Baltic Sea coast witnessed many historical events but most people remember the beginning of trade union “Solidarity” in Gdansk shipyard in September 1980. Gdansk is also considered the most beautiful city in Pomerania. Together with Sopot and Gdynia they form a metropolitan area called Tricity (Trojmiasto). For those who prefer more peaceful places to visit there are beautiful parks such as Bory Tucholskie National Park, which has recently been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
