Onam (Malayalam) is the largest festival in the Indian state of Kerala, located in southern India. According to the legend, Kerala experienced their golden era during the rule of King Mahabali. The Onam festival allows his adoring public to celebrate his rule.
This ten day celebration involves creating intricate carpets made of flowers, traditional game playing, eccentric dance performances and an elaborate feast. Another popular event that takes place is called Vallamkali, the Snake Boat Race. Hundreds of people row the colorfully decorated boats while the spectators cheer and chant.
